Speculative Logo Redesign

The logo is the window of the soul... or something like that.

The process...

research

The thing that stood out to me about Babalon's logo from the beginning was just how unique it was in the saturated sea of tattoo studio logos. The pink and retro feel not only spoke for the studio's style, but stood out in a sea of black and red.

designs

The original logo was clearly very inspired by kitschy and Googie mid century design styles but it came off as being dashed together with colours that in some spots become a struggle to read. I wanted to keep with this feel but update their logo to something that would look great on all platforms and merchandise as well as at all sizes.

finalizing

This was a lesson in “your favourite won’t always be the public or your client’s favourite”. I had one design that I was sure from the get go was going to be my final design, it was one of the first I created and it did make it pretty far but ultimately it was replaced by the final concept which actually was one of the last few designs I came up with on my original sketch sheets.

mock ups

Its easy to just throw a logo on a blank t-shirt, show it to a client and call it a day, but a good mock up is a purposeful one. Aside from the mandatory stationery, I made sure that all other included mockups were not only of the highest quality, but also things that the studio might be interested in,

brand guide

This was my first time creating a brand guide! I enjoyed the process, tedious as it was, it gave me time to think more deeply and critically about the design I had made. The brand guide is 35 pages of the Do's and Don'ts for the studio's new branding.

fin

All in all, this was one monster of a project that due to its scope made it difficult to see the end of the tunnel, but man once that brand guide was finished and I took a step back to look at the unique brand I had created was I proud. The new logo and subsequent branding takes just enough from the old without it feeling the exact same either.
